Tri-Star Basketball Camp

Tri-Star Basketball Camp is the leading basketball camp for ages 5 through 18 in the Phoenix area that focuses on building the individual fundamentals of basketball to ensure player success. Started in 1983, Tri-Star has produced numerous All-State, All-Division, and All-Section players as well as many players that have continued at the collegiate level. Our goal is to foster the continued improvement of individuals in a disciplined situation. Individual competition, shooting contests and awards are an integral part of camp, but we concentrate on the individual needs of the camper. The following fundamental basketball skills will be offered in all sessions:

The 2023 Tri-Star basketball camp will take place over one 4-week session.

Meet the Coaches

Howard Mueller

Coach Mueller has been the Varsity Head Boys Basketball Coach at Greenway High School since 1981. He has over 500 wins in his coaching career and his teams have won numerous region and section titles throughout his coaching tenure. His 2009 team went 30-0 and won the state title, and he coached runner-up teams in 1997 and 1998. He was voted the Sectional Coach of the Year in 2013, the Arizona Republic’s Big Schools Coach of the Year in 2009, and the Winner of the Spirit of Cotton Award presented by the Phoenix Suns. He also serves as the director of the Judy Dixon Memorial Classic Tournament and other various AIA tournaments.

Dan Mannix

Coach Mannix was the Varsity Head Boys Basketball Coach at Sunnyslope High School from 1976 through 2010. He has over 500 wins in his coaching career, and his teams have won numerous region and section titles throughout the years. He has coached two state championship teams in 2002 and 2009, runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2010, and Final Four finishes in 1989, 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2010. He was chosen the Arizona Republic’s Big Schools Coach of the Year in 2002. He was elected to coach in the ABCA State All-Star game in 1988 and 1993. Coach Mannix was also elected to the Arizona High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2013 and the National Coaches Hall of Fame in 2019. 

Ray Portela

Coach Portela has been the Varsity Head Boys Basketball Coach at Sunnyslope High School since 2010. In his thirteen seasons, his teams have averaged over 20 wins each year. He has coached 3 state championship teams in 2021, 2018, 2017, and were runners-up in 2016. Coach Portela was named the Ballislife.com National Coach of the Year in 2021 and the National Federation of High School’s Western Region Coach of the Year in 2018.  He was named the AZCentral Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2018, AIA 6A Coach of the Year in 2021, ArizonaVarsity.com 5A Coach of the Year in 2018, and ArizonaPreps.com Big Schools Coach of the Year in 2016.  His teams have won region championships in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021, and 2022 and he was named Region Coach of the Year in those years. He was the winner of the Spirit of Cotton Award by the Phoenix Suns in 2018, and in 2013 he was voted as a Coach in the 2013 ABCA State All-Star game.
